A Word In Defense Of Women And Computers

Firstly, I don’t want to start an argument but the first electronic computer was not the ENIAC. The first computer was built at Bletchley Park in the UK during World War II and was used to crack the German’s secret codes. Its existence was kept secret long after the end of the war, thereby allowing others to claim first place, although for some strange reason the technology was shared with the Americans.

Anyway, this site is about computer confidence for women. As a woman in my sixties who has built and runs several websites – take a look at my site selling personalised christening gifts – I find it a little odd and a trifle offensive that someone seems to think there is a need for such a site as this. I don’t want to come across as a grumpy old woman, but why does anyone think women as a breed are wary of using computers? Figures show that the majority of ‘silver surfers’ are women. Alright, women do most of the shopping and the internet is increasingly being used to shop, but one doesn’t have to be a geek to use a computer. It would take a crowbar to separate the modern generation (both sexes) from their computers, so I assume the suggested computer phobia affects the older generation; but statistics suggest women as users are well represented. I couldn’t sell my personalised christening gifts without my website, and most of the customers buying the christening gifts are women. Maybe this site should be aimed at men?
